Crafted 100% by my hand, this Sgian Dubh knife blade features a stunning 240 layer twist damascus steel blade.
Acid etched to reveal the fine pattern on the steel. Like a fingerprint, but finer, it's unique to each piece.
Jimping along the spine and a simple, but elegant handle constructed of Sycamore wood and a Brass ferrule & pin.
Forge welded layers of 1080 and 15N20 steel, beginning at just 6 layers! It was drawn out into a long bar, then cut into 5 equal length sections and restacked to make 30 layers. This was then forge welded again and drawn out into a long bar. Cut into 8 sections, and you got it, restacked and forge welded for a third time!
Now we have a 240 layer stack of alternating layers of two types of steel!
This bar was then drawn out once again, this time made into a square cross section bar approx 20-25mm thick. After forging the corners in slightly to octagonalise the square, the bar was then heated to a high heat and twisted, round and round and round. Until I dare not twist any further!
After the twist we forge the thing back into a flat bar of the desired thickness. Now we finally have the starting material to actually make a knife (there's a reason damascus ain't cheap! 😜)
Will be making a leather sheath for this blade and will update this listing with new pictures in a day or two when it is done, made from durable, thick leather. Hand stitched and moulded to fit this piece like a glove (price includes sheath)
Very comfortable worn in the sock as part of the traditional highland dress.
